Dragon Ball 16

The part with Shen kind of fizzled out sooner than I had hoped at the beginning, but the battle between Goku and Piccolo was… quite epic. My favorite part was probably that Piccolo got so huge and Goku still tricked him.
I’m glad that everything stayed inside the tournament. It kept the mood much lighter, particularly since Goku didn’t seem too worried about the fight or it getting out of hand. Piccolo was also somewhat more subdued in his new incarnation. The outcome and how Goku treated it was also quite nice, and of course it leaves the series open for other things. Things that come much later. Well, not really. Things that come as soon as the next volume.
Here’s a tiny spoiler for you, and I’m marking it because it was a surprise for me, too…

I didn’t think Goku ever won the Budokai. I thought one of the running gags in the series was that he should’ve won every time, but that he never did due to circumstance. It was nice to see him finally get it, though I’m willing to bet that he never does again.
