Fruits Basket 15

So this volume scratched many of my itches as far as stuff I’d like to see from this series goes.  We finally find out a lot more about Yuki’s past, though it is of the dark and depressing variety of course, and we also finally find out about the hat incident.  Maybe I need to reread the first half of the series or something, but it didn’t quite match up to what I remembered of Tohru’s side of the story.  I’m sure it’s just me, though.  We also got to see Tohru’s mom again!  Hooray!

The school play was a little bit better than I’d hope, but that’s mostly because we got huge romance drama towards the end, the type of thing I’ve been craving.  Unfortunately, these two characters still need to address this situation, but it was good.  “Sorta Cinderella” was a good way to approach that, and it allowed the character personalities to display themselves without making too much a mess of the actual day.  But I don’t know, I still hate school plays.

We also got a lengthy diatribe from the third boy involved about exactly how he felt about the other two.  A confrontation between Kyo and Yuki also occurrs, and it is good.

The ENTIRE first half of the volume is depressing, though.  It was also information that I could either infer or guess based on the previous tragic tales of the Sohmas, but at least it was Yuki’s past.

  1. [...] some offensive content. At Slightly Biased Manga, Connie whittles down the stack with reviews of vol. 15 of Fruits Basket, vol. 16 of Dragon Ball, vol. 1 of DVD, vol. 8 of Phoenix, and vol. 4 of Sgt. Frog. [...]

yeah, that first part was killer – 2 pages in and i was already starting to bawl…of course, i usually cry at least once a volume, but it’s usually momiji that’s wringing the tears out of me…

sometimes, i really hate being an old softy, ergh.

and as far as tohru and kyo, i was all “come on, come *on*…i do so adore that yuki’s trying to come into his own and at least giving kyo stuff to think about…

Yeah, everything is FINALLY getting good, though I do agree that the Kyo/Tohru thing needs to go a LOT faster if it’s going to go anywhere.

I like what’s going on with Yuki so far, but I kind of want to see where that goes, too. He’s the only character so far that’s put his heart on his sleeve, and I desperately want to see more of that.

Believe me,things definitely start picking up. I’ve read 16 and I’ve read 17 online, you definitely get plot advancement in these two volumes.

I just got 16 in the mail, and I’m kind of looking forward to reading it for a change. I know about… Akito’s secret as that was unfortunately spoiled for me like the day after it came out in Japan on about six blogs before I even set eyes on the first volume, so I am looking forward to that and how it will affect things.

I’m waiting for my copy of volume 17 to arrive. I hear it shakes things up quite a bit. 15 has been my favorite volume so far, though.

Volume 15 was also one of my favourites, despite the part on Yuki’s depressing and predictable past. Things pick up a lot more in the later volumes.
