Go Go Heaven 1
March 27, 2007
How did I forget to talk about this one? That’s a bit troubling. I read it last week and picked it up because of the interesting plot summary. I thought it would go down good after finishing Bride of Deimos, because they have the same plot, in spirit (not really, but I really wanted to read Bride of Deimos and this was the closest thing on my shelf that I hadn’t read). This… this was not very good.
The plot IS good. A girl dies, but is saved by the prince of hell while she is being judged. Said character is just called Prince. He gives her 40-some days to put her life back in order or something before she has to go off on a final judgement, either heaven or hell. As she was, the main character was a soulless doll, but going back, constantly accompanied by Prince and his entourage, she develops personality.
The problem is that this personality is not significant. She is one of the weakest, most uninteresting crybaby heroines EVER. This is also a comedy, so a ton of stupid jokes are flying in your face the entire time. If the humor was toned down, I think the series would be a lot better. There are some cool elements shining through, but everything from the characters to the subplots needs a LOT of work at this point.
Also, this isn’t something I usually notice either, but there’s too much going on in each page. I have a hard time going from panel to panel in some of the chaotic layouts. It’s not an issue like with Viz books where HUGE sfx retouch art will sometimes take up an entire page, there are just 500 panels per page with something confusing going on in each one. Too much!
I want to like it, though. I’ll keep reading it, because again, I like the plot enough to tolerate all the crap. I finished the book with no negative feelings, which surprised me because it was really bad and I usually wind up finishing those types of books pissed. It’s not a terribly long series, but I am curious to see what happens after the main character’s time runs out, which happens next volume.

Ive also read this…mostly because of the story….and the heroine did cry A LOT.But like you I will purchase the second volume and hope and prays shirayuki finally grows some backbone.

Yeah… surely she can’t keep her lukewarm personality all the way through. Hopefully something very cool will happen at the end of volume two or in volume three when the judgement is over. I mean, the plot is cool, but I can’t tolerate the crying every other page for more than a couple volumes.

exactly…its like “wonder what shirayuki will do next? Oh look how surprising shes crying”But since ive gotten the impression that its her first work? and people comparing it to VS…I porbably think its beginners faults.Lets see how the second volume unfolds^^

Yeah, VS looks really good, and I’ve heard people talk a lot about one or two of her other series, so I know Keiko Yamada can write a good story, so there’s still a lot of hope for this one.

never read VS….it sounds so angsty…well angsty is good in small doses.
PS…Wonder exactly how many manga/manwha there is out there involving a normal human girl and a prince/king of the underworld? I bet there are a lot of them.

Yeah, I bet so too. Bride of Deimos is one I just recently read, but it’s a TON better than this one. The series is a lot more about these horror stories, and each chapter is kind of a one-shot, but the theme of Deimos (king of the underworld) trying to take the main character as his bride comes up in almost all of them.

Hello!
Big fan of Go~ Go~ Heaven!! here wanting to let you know that while yes the plot does change, it becomes rather dark…while retaining the silliness, if you can believe.
Shirayuki continues to cry, I will say, but I think that if you consider what the poor girl is going through you’ll be less likely to hit her *every* time. You’ll go with every other…^__~
Yes, each page is PACKED with art…that also doesn’t change.
VS, BTW, skweeked me owing to the fact that the hero, the violinist, is 12. 12!! When he kisses his sempai I was like HE’S 12!!!! I sold my copies to the used bookstore the next day.
I will freely admit that if CMX carries GGH!! to the end, I will be amazed. I can’t imagine it garnering a large fan base and can, sadly, see it being cancelled. But I live in hope. ^__^
Hope volume 2 meets your expectations, heck knows I’ll just be thrilled to paw it! ;-)

Thanks for the explanation! I think I’d actually like it a lot if it went down the darker path. I love the plot, and I tend to like darker series, anyway. I can handle silliness if there’s a really strong plot to back it up, even though I’m not much of a fan of silliness (Sorcerer Hunters is a good example, I hate loving that series so much).
I don’t think CMX is much for canceling series (at least so far). They still run a couple like Swan and From Eroica with Love which come out extremely infrequently, but they haven’t outright canceled them, so I think that bodes well for this one.
Thanks for the head’s up on VS, too. Young stuff like that is one of my no-nos >_

I see what you mean. After reading Go Go Heaven, I had to rub my eyes because the art was…thick. I don’t know how to explain it. The plot didn’t confuse me, the order did. It was, sloppy. I can’t find the correct words.

After reading the first three volumes, it does seem like things slowly start to settle down, but there are still a lot of confusing moments where there’s tons of stuff on the page and I’m not sure what the plot is doing… but the basic plot is still good. If it keeps improving incrementally, I’ll probably wind up really liking it.

I read up to volume 3, and like every one said, the art was thick and the main character a bit, well, ditsy. Prince was overbearing, and I feel sorry for green. All in all, you would think I’d stop reading it, but, this series is, there’s no other word for it, addicting. I went right through all three books in about three hours.

I’m waiting for volume 5 to arrive, but I always wind up reading these as soon as they come in. It is a really bad series, but you’re right, there’s something horribly addicting about it. I can’t for the life of me figure out what it is, but I can freely admit this is the worst manga I can’t stop reading. I don’t even know that I like it, necessarily, but I do feel compelled to read it.
