Saint Seiya 3

I’ve got like five volumes left in my to review pile, but I’m too tired to think of something coherent to say, and they’re all pretty good.  Three of them require me to articulate just how awesome they really are.  So in lieu of a more thoughtful entry about a great series… not that this isn’t a great series.  It’s a lot of fun, just not very substantial.

FEEL THE COSMOS!

I want to leave it like that. I really do. It seems appropriate. But then I wouldn’t be able to mention the awesome battles between the Black Knights and the Knights of Athena. What about the false Swan Knight? What about girly Andromeda Knight? What about manly… Dragon (?) Knight that may or may not be dead? There was an awesome scene at the end of this volume that needs discussing because of the way it totally came out of left field with a weirdly… emotional moment. Um.

This is still pretty nonstop, and I still don’t really know how to critique it. It’s just huge amounts of manly awesome, but a lot shallower that Jojo. That’s about it. I’ll let you know when something important happens, but it seems like important things are constantly trumped by more important things, so it’s hard to say.

Did I mention that the head Black Knight is someone’s psychotic brother who used to be a real sissy baby? That seems important. He may or may not have been lobotomized, as he does sport a huge scar across his forehead. Maybe he just fell.

This is a book that I just don’t know if I want to start getting it or not. It sounds like great fun, and while everyone else holds their noses at ‘tounament manga’, I find books with nonstop action endearing. Not that it’s high art, but there’s just something about how Japanese authors handle fighting that is exciting and emotional. You acctually anticipate the fight, unlike in western style where it’s wham bam and over. Just don’t know if I want to start getting it or not.

Yeah, as much as I like this one, I’m still not sure if I should be buying it or not. I like tournament manga that switch things up throughout the fights and ones like this that don’t linger too long one any one thing and just move very quickly to the next situation.

It’s hard to justify buying it though, because I know nothing will ever change as the series goes on, and it’s very long. It’s a fun treat to read a volume every now and again though, and I’ll probably keep picking it up infrequently.
