Guru Guru Pon-Chan 8
Posted: June 29, 2007 Filed under: Guru Guru Pon-chan 10 Comments »I read this one awhile ago (almost as soon as I got it), but I’m just now getting around to it. I’ve got a couple more volumes from awhile ago to get to as well, but less now than last week. I just didn’t want you to think I’d been sitting on a new volume of this for more than a few days.
I know no one cares about this series but me, and I know it’s silly of me to care about it, but it’s SO GOOD despite being so stupid. I say that every time I review a volume of this, but it bears repeating since I don’t think anyone else reads it (if we’re going to refer to librarything again, I’m definitely the only one reading it there). This volume doesn’t stray too far from the formula and wins yet again with really sweet and sensitive stories that win out over their silliness.
The first story is especially silly, but it really had me going. Mirai turns into a dog like Ponta when he licks the guru guru bone, which is a weird thought. Except he doesn’t turn into the big, manly dog you may imagine. Oh no, he turns into a little wimpy dog. Together, he and Ponta fight off a burglar. It’s quite a cute way to open the volume.
There are a few short stories about Ponta as a puppy that aren’t as good since they don’t appeal to my like of Ponta/Mirai. Moving on.
The main draw in this volume, and also a cliffhanger, is the fact that Ponta may be dying due to stressing out her body with physical change. She doesn’t realize this and doesn’t understand, but everyone’s really broken-hearted. It leaves off as a cliffhanger… but the damn preview pages don’t leave much to the imagination. Part of me hopes there’s some way out of that mess, or I’m going to be crying my eyes out when the last volume of the series comes.
I think I’d really like the series a lot if that was how it ended though. Not many series will go through with such a final, character-altering event like that. Well… while I do like it when the endings rock the boat a little, I’m not sure if I could handle sweet little Ponta dying. Ugh. I can’t wait for the last volume now.
“I know no one cares about this series but me…”
No, you’re not. I bought vol. 1 back when it first came out (can’t resist manga with dogs) and fell in love. After a loooooong dry spell, it’s one of the first manga I went back to.

Oh, I had forgotten! I had read your reviews of it some time ago and gotten very excited that someone else liked it. I suspect we are the only two, though :p
I LOVE this manga. I get it from the library, or online, anywhere I can! It rocks, so don’t put yourself down for liking it. Keep on rocking !
:):):):):):):):):)
Glad to hear other people are reading it too ^_^
I love this manga too. Its super cute =D I bought it absolutely ages ago and i think its just fantastic! xx.
It’s been forever now since I read it, but I was thinking of it just the other day, and it’s still one of my favorite shoujo series. There hasn’t really been a couple quite as good as Ponta and Mirai since.
Omg it’s great to see I’m not the only person who reads this! I love this series it’s so adorable *makes the pon-chan happy face*. I’m really frustrated though :/ every place I look where I live no one has any volumes past 2 and they would have to order them and that would take FOREVER!!! So I tried to read it online but the two sites I went to only went up to chapter 11 of volume 3. Obviously there is more then just those volumes, so can anyone tell where else I can read it? It’s not like I read and then that’s it, I buy every book I read online. So please help? T.T
Oh, I’m glad you like it so much! I don’t know that you’re going to find it online, not only is it really unknown, but it’s also licensed and fully available in English, so I can’t imagine there would be much point in doing a full scanslation. Since it’s not very popular and has been complete for over a year, you’ll also probably never see the later volumes in the store. I would say that ordering them is probably going to be your best bet, either from the stores or from an online shop like justmanga.com.
Special orders from someplace like Borders shouldn’t take too long, though. I’m looking at the stock levels on Ingram for a few of the books right now, and they seem to be available, so it should only take them around 1-3 days to get them in if you order them.
I positively love this manga! I’ve only read vol. 1 and I’m already hooked! The cover looked so adorable and a friend recommended it to me because she said it was cute and funny, so I said why not and took it out. Ponta is so cute and carefree that you automatically like her.
To be honest, at first I was a little skeptical of Mirai. I didn’t outright like him and I really wondered what Pon-chan saw in him, but then when you see them connect and just look plain silly and goofy, I realized that they both compliment each other and the relationship is so hilarious. The whole manga and story itself is downright eccentric, but in a cute and funny way that you just appreciate it for that.
Now I’m just searching for vol. 2 because I am ITCHING to know what happens next!^^
If you liked it that much after volume one, you’re in for a real treat. It’s still one of my absolute favorites. I think I wasn’t hooked until the second or third volume, but I was an absolute slave to it by the fourth or fifth.
I’m so glad you found it though, it’s sadly overlooked. The dynamic between Ponta and Mirai is one of the nicest in any manga I’ve read.
