Saint Seiya 5

To give this series its credit, it doesn’t ALWAYS take the most painfully obvious path.  It often does, and you come to expect it.  To sharply derail whatever may be going on by introducing silver assassins is just part of what goes on here, so you expect battles to end abruptly by a solid punch delivered by the hero, the fallen foe picking himself up and miraculously finding the error in his ways.  That’s not quite what goes down, but it’s pretty close.

In case you prefer Shun, Shiryu, or Hyoga, they are actually out cold after the first few pages.  Most of the volume is Seiya and Ikki facing off, and when they’re done there, the aforementioned silver assassins show up and kill the boys.  Well, “kill” in a Saint Seiya way.  Marin shows up again briefly.

In case you thought the random appearance of the bizarre Silver Knights, dispatched by Athena to take out our heroes for violating a rule of knighthood wasn’t confusing enough (what rule of knighthood? maybe I just forgot, it seems like they’ve been doing the right thing all along), a fight scene between Seiya and Misty, a silver knight who everyone claims is a man but totally looks like a woman, quickly derails when Misty inexplicably strips down buck naked and wanders into the ocean, talking about how beautiful he is.

That’s just what kind of manga this is.

Also, at one point little gravestones are made up for the 4 hero bronze knights.  We of course get Pegasus, Dragon, and Andromeda… but the other cross says “CyXXus”, with part of the word obscured.  I… had to look that up, but apparently he isn’t the Swan Saint, he’s the Cygnus Saint.  Huh.
