XxXholic 9

Oh my God, we STILL did not find out what was up with the 3 main characters.  It’s going to be ten volumes in.  I think it’s time to let the cat out of the bag.  Why does Watanuki hate Domeki and love Himawari?  I know there’s a good reason for it.

Other than that, Holic is still pretty awesome.  This volume gives us a visit from a dream merchant.  Watanuki gives himself some good karma by giving one of his earned good dreams to the little fox spirit from earlier in the series.  I’m sure that will come back for him.  He’s earned some good fortune.

Actually, nothing particularly bad happens in this volume.  He has to deal with a kind of frightening “true dream” that he gets saved from by coincidence (which, of course, indirectly involved Domeki), but after that, he has a bizarre dream, and the other main story in the volume is about a little girl who’s trying to exorcise a ghost from a cherry tree.  She kind of bonds with Watanuki, and he feels bad for her because she seems like she’s mistreated by her mother.  She’ll probably be back later.

Yuko continues to be great.  When Watanuki was talking about how fortuitous it was that he wound up with one specific dream from the dream merchant, he mentioned coincidence, and I mouthed Yuko’s line immediately before I read it: “There is no coincidence, only hitsuzen.”  Ah, when will he learn?

Mostly it was more of the stylish weirdness that you’ve come to expect from Holic.  There’s a really random tie-in with Tsubasa that unfortunately doesn’t correspond to anything that’s happened in the English version of the series yet.  But it’s kind of nice that it came before, because now we know that the character is on his way.  I wonder if maybe it was originally set up like this.

I hope volume 10 (which is supposed to come out in October) isn’t as delayed as this one was.  I JUST got 9, and it was supposed to come out in I think June.  The summary promises an explanation for Himawari, so I’m pretty excited.
