Oh My Goddess 27

November 23, 2007

There was something a little… off about this volume.  Keiichi as a sort of dopey doormat with no opinion is not something that is not terribly out-of-character, but there is something particularly vacant about him in this volume.  He seems to just smile and nod and be a good guy in this volume, like all the fight’s been taken out of him.  I hope he gets his personality back when the series veers onto its next major story arc.

We get the finish of the story from last volume, where Keiichi’s angel is being drawn from his body and accepted by Bell.  Urd and Skuld try to stop her since this will destroy her (or something, I can’t quite remember), but Bell almost gets nasty with them for this delay.  Things work out okay though, and the cat that lives with them comes into play, so it winds up being a very Oh My Goddess story.

There’s a really cute side story in here about little robots from an alternate dimension that show up to be serviced by Keiichi in his shop after his boss leaves.  This was my favorite story in the book, but even it was touched with a little of the dopey Keiichi syndrome, unfortunately.

There’s also a really weird rubber band war that eventually draws everyone in, including Keiichi.  When he jumps in though, things have already escalated to Urd, Skuld, and Peorth firing what appear to be fan belts with things like spirits and tanks.

Eh.  Nothing too heavy here, but it was a nice breath of fresh air after the heavy storyline with Lind.  We’ll see what the next big thing is next, I suppose.

This volume made me really, really miss the old large-format volumes.  I could not remember what the conflict was that Bell was so mad about in the first chapter, and I realized how good I had it when the whole story arc was contained within one book.  Oh, for the good old days.

horrible filler. i mean cute and silly but in the end this was bad fluff and volume 28 better redeem itself.

Yeah, that’s what was off about this volume. You hit the nail on the head. It’s hard for me to pick out the filler after reading it for so many years, which is embarrassing when it’s so obvious.
