The first opponent was introduced last volume, and Jan prepares a simple and very traditional dish in order to properly humiliate him. The opponent is a big showoff when it comes to preparation, and he has a large section of female fans cheering for him.
The second opponent didn’t need Jan’s help to be humiliated. It was set up as a battle between traditional methods of preparation versus his cooking machines. I myself wouldn’t mind a vacuum cooker, because I can’t cook meat to save my life, but it was a detriment in this case. He failed because he was a bad chef.
Jan’s third opponent was actually a nice guy, and Jan used a little psychological strategy on the judges in order to win with the simplest dish possible.
The tail end of one of Kiriko’s matches was also shown. Kiriko and a girl from Kobe who mixes French and traditional Chinese cooking will be squaring off against Jan in the final round of the competition, which is in the next volume.
But yes, it’s still quite addictive and good.
