Iron Wok Jan 7

We got to see the head of Gobancho again, and he disses the chefs at the restaurant for not being creative.  He cooks spring rolls to perfection, and then says the other chefs can have a competition to add their dish to the menu.  Inspired by his choice of example, all the other chefs decide to make spring rolls.  Jan is actually forced into the choice when he brags to the old man in the bath, and there’s a really bizarre scene featuring a totally naked Jan facing the really buff Gobancho patriarch down.  Gobancho is actually one of the few people Jan respects.

So commences the spring roll battle.  It stumps Kiriko, and Jan worries so much that he digs through the trash at other restaurants for inspiration.  He asks inside to see how they cook spring rolls first (he goes to non-Chinese restaurants to see their spring rolls, ie Vietnamese, etc), but his reputation beats him there.  The Vietnamese chefs, for example, are extremely afraid when they learn who it is that they’ve been helping.  It’s actually pretty awesome when Jan is confronted like that.

At the restaurant, Gobancho judges the spring rolls.  He spits the spring rolls of the background characters back into their faces, so we’re left with Kiriko, Jan, and Celine… plus the other trainee, who brings his stuff out right at the end and may be a contender.  Once again, I like that Jan forms a friendship with him and sticks up for him.  Also, Jan does evil things to his food yet again.  I promise you, that will never get old.  I’ve never burned through a series this fast willingly.  I may be plodding through Dragon Ball and RG Veda this week, but this is the only one I’m honestly enjoying.  I’m going to order 11-20 probably on Wednesday since all those are on sale, but I’m sad they won’t be shipped until after the first of the year.
