Moon Child 2

I figured once everything had been laid out and explained in volume 1, the series might take a more traditional shoujo storyline.  Volume 2 continued to totally blow me away with its continued unveiling of the excellent fantasy elements and great atmosphere.  I figured I knew everything there was to know about mermaids, but then Jimmy changes, and I learn  a little more.

The first part of the volume lets us know that somehow Jimmy can control his powers around Art.  Jimmy seems to be able to use his powers to make things work out for Art, and the two seem to be living a relatively happy life together.  Art’s old girlfriend shows up in the middle of the good day Jimmy was having, and because she’s a miserable harpy, things go poorly for Jimmy after that.  The mermaids show up to chastise him a bit more, and when he fails to live up to their expectations and lies to them, he turns into a werewolf in the full moonlight.

Actually, he only thinks he’s turned into a werewolf.  He actually turns into a beautiful older woman who cannot speak.  For some reason.  I think if he actually had turned into a werewolf, the series could not be any weirder.  Art isn’t sure what to think when he returns to his apartment and there’s this naked girl there instead of Jimmy.

After some playing around, it turns out Shonach recognizes Jimmy.  When they are left alone together, Shonach loses control and starts making out with him.  Jimmy doesn’t like this, and it seems to trigger some psychic abilities where he views the past and the future.  His transformation wears off just in time for Shonach to realize he’s been snogging what appears to be a young boy.

DAMN IS THIS A WEIRD SERIES.  I love it though.  Every time I think I’ve seen the extent of the weirdness, a cobra shows up to chase bums off a mostly naked lass lying in the middle of the street in New York City.  In addition to the weirdness, it’s also got an excellent fatalistic shoujo romance plot.  Bonus!

Read the whole volume this morning in work.. ^_^
I forgot to add to my comment about the first volume, that it actually reminded me somewhat of Sandman – A Game of You, when that big fish appeared on the street of New York.. ^_^
Anyway, so far so good, I’v still 2 volumes to read.. ^_^

Funny, I just got the end of the Sandman series in the mail yesterday, and was planning on re-reading the whole thing again. I hadn’t thought about the two of them together, but they are similar in tone, if only because the weirdness in Moon Child is somewhat dreamlike. Or maybe because Jimmy’s various magic stuff, at least initially, is a lot like something Delirium would do.

I’m so excited about the end of Moon Child now, which should be coming out at the beginning of June. It sounds quite improbable and very drama-tastic.
