Skip Beat 4

Whatever else may have happened in this volume (and this includes the hilarious possibility that Ren’s nickname as a child was “corn”), it was completely overshadowed by Kyoko’s brush with Sho on a variety show.

I wasn’t too clear on how it happened, but somehow Kyoko was sent to the variety show with the foreknowledge that Sho would be there, but it may have been under the pretense of some sort of reward… because I think the person who sent her thinks Kyoko is a Sho fan?  I wasn’t sure.  Anyway, Kyoko dresses in a chicken suit and there’s a badminton tournament between her and Sho on live TV.  It is awesome.  Sho may actually have recognized it was Kyoko this time, but they don’t meet face-to-face, which is unfortunate.  Lots of stuff goes down between them though, and that’s fine by me.  Actually, what was awesome was that Kyoko spent most of the volume in the chicken suit.  She didn’t take it off even when having a serious heart-to-heart with Ren in the last chapter or so.

I also liked the fact that the character-building process in this series is slow and subtle.  There were a few personality fragments revealed about Ren in these two volumes, and Kyoko seems to be revealing more and more of her personality which isn’t evil and is more about working hard.  I still much prefer the evil Kyoko, but I think the balance between the two in the end is probably ideal.

I’m seriously going to buy up the next six volumes and have a huge marathon.  This series is SO GOOD.

I am seriously going to start this series… soonish. There’s some backlogs on other series to address, and I really want to finish Kare Kano. But then! :)

I was totally blown away by how good it was. It’s really easy to get into, and it’s one of the best shoujo series I’ve read in a long time. It’s almost Nana good.

almost Nana good? gurrrrl please! Skip Beat is incredible. it’s so good, i’m in pain waiting for volume 10. it really only gets better

It’s pretty incredible, but I’ll stand by Nana as slightly better, if only because it’s written for older girls and that type of series usually appeals to me more. Skip Beat wins serious points for being a high school-age series that doesn’t take place in a high school, though. I need to wait a couple weeks before I can get the rest of it, but I’m seriously craving the rest of the volumes.

I remember reading scanlations of Skip Beat a loong time ago but I don’t remember why I stopped keeping up with it! Thank you for reigniting my love for this series….

If you like shoujo series as much as I do~ Have you read Hana yori Dango? Or how about Emma?

  6. Connie says:

I haven’t read Hana Yori Dango, I need courage before I can start another really long series like that. Though I’m sure I’d like it. I have been seriously considering Emma though, it sounds fantastic.

I just read this volume and loved it. My review is here: http://www.flaminggeeks.com/swanjun/?p=381

I would also recommend Hana Yori Dango. I’ve just started it recently (was hoarding it) and it’s really awesome. Kind of over-the-top in the way Skip Beat! is, but really wonderful.

And to conclude on an anal-retentive note, Emma may be great, but it isn’t shoujo. :)

  8. Connie says:

That’s true about Emma, I sometimes forget.

You and many others. I think seinen romances are vastly more appealing to a female audience than their shounen counterparts. :)
