Skip Beat 5

Things are stepped up a little here as Kyoko suddenly finds herself a regular on a variety show (though undercover, as an embarrassing bit part, so it doesn’t really count as a “debut” per se), and both Kyoko and Moko audition independent from their talent agency for a part in a commercial, thus somehow breaking the Love Me system.  But it’s okay, because they still wear the pink uniforms around and help people out and everything.

Most of this volume focuses on the audition for the commercial and sort of showing how hard Moko has wanted to act.  A girl from her past shows up who has always bought roles out from under Moko with her family’s money, so the goal of the volume becomes Kyoko and Moko showing the girl that money is no substitute for good acting.  One of the initial drawbacks to this is that there’s only one part available, so helping Moko “beat” the other girl will potentially make Kyoko lose the role to Moko.  It’s really fun though, and involves a lot of pop being thrown around.  It’s really fun watching the characters grow and overcome their weaknesses, and I wind up loving Kyoko and Moko more and more each volume despite the fact both are characters I’d probably hate in any other series.
