Saint Seiya 14
Posted: September 25, 2008 Filed under: Knights of the Zodiac 8 Comments »This is just the beginning of the next story arc, and it very much tickled my fancy. The four heroes (apparently Ikki is… space dust now) are at death’s door in the hospital, but there is no rest for Athena. First Sienna is hit on by some sort of tycoon, and when she shoots him down, he finds that he’s actually got the power of the sea god Poseidon. Poseidon has his own underwater kingdom, complete with knights of his own. Most of the volume establishes the fact that Poseidon and his knights are no match at all for Athena’s knights, but then he decides to play God and flood the world, killing everyone on it. Athena just gives herself up as a sacrifice, which is supposed to stop him and doesn’t, so the four main characters snap out of their comas and go for a swim.
By the way, my brain shut off while reading this since I was unable to fathom how more water was created in order to cause flooding like this. No explanation was ever offered, or if it was offered, it was a total blow-off explanation, like that was just the strength of Poseidon’s cosmo or something. I’m not sure why I couldn’t let this little bit of science go, but it was definitely giving me trouble.
Okay, so. If I’m reading this right, Poseidon’s kingdom is underneath the ocean, and the ocean is held up by pillars, and then there’s breatheable air underneath the water. In order to save Athena, who is held in a pillar in the middle of the castle that is slowly being filled with water to drown her, the knights have to knock down the other pillars holding up the ocean, and each one is guarded by a general. The fighting for this has not really gotten underway, but I sincerely hope that the Poseidon arc has more to it than the boys just fighting pillar general after pillar general. We just got through the 12 zodiac knights, I don’t know if I can do this again.
Also, as I mentioned before, the knights did mop the floor with every opponent in this volume. Aside from that, apparently the fight between Athena and Poseidon is an ancient one, and one that is fought every time the two are resurrected. Apparently, the Knights of Athena always win the fight. I’m not sure why I’m even still reading, since it’s spelled out right there, but I’m sure there’ll be some fun insanity along the way.
yes!! the twister scene is my favorite in that book, especially the page where she draws the three of them alllooking very shocked in a style similar to the guy who does drifting classroom.
^oopss…meant to post that on honey&clover volume 2 :(
It seems like I should be able to move the comments to different posts, but I can’t figure it out. Hmm. Let me work on it a little more.
I didn’t notice the resemblance to Kazuo Umezu, but you’re right, it turns weirdly into a horror manga moment for some reason. I also liked the explanation the girls gave for not playing, and the fact it just kept going… it really was an awesome scene.

The Poseidon arc is the weakest of the 3 manga arcs. It’s also the shortest(ends in volume 18), but it gets better.
And Poseidon is a God so he creates as much water as he wants. :P
Also the art improves a lot in this arc (well the first tomes are downright ugly ^^ ) and even more in the next one. (Which is much better. ^^ ).
Seiya was always better in anime form than in manga, because the OST is one of the best I’ve heard in any anime, but the manga is fun just because of the non-stop action. XD
You’re right about the art in the first volumes, the anatomy was what really got me. There were a few panels that were so off-model they made me laugh.
I’m glad this is a short arc, though. If it really is just the boys fighting the generals underwater with no exposition, I have to say it’s not going to hold my interest for very long. I do want to read the Hades arc, though.
Well each boy gets one fight (Ikki just come back saying “Once again the phoenix has come back from hell!” and starts kicking ass like usual. XD), then the standard formula breaks and we get some plot advancement. ^^
And Hades doesn’t follow that formula of defeat the X guardians, don’t worry. :)
Yeah, I figured Ikki would come back. They always come back, which is one of the things I love most about this series. I loved that they talked about all the characters that died in the Sanctuary fights, and yet the main characters still come back to life again and again.
