My Heavenly Hockey Club 7
Posted: March 9, 2009 Filed under: My Heavenly Hockey Club 8 Comments »Noooo! I was all ready for plot development! Hana was all ready to go to France! She told Izumi off! I was so READY! Alas, it is a shoujo manga at heart. You are a cruel, cruel mistress, Ai Morinaga.
The first chapter is just disturbing in a way that only Ai Morinaga can write. It’s actually an entire story about the hate between Wacky and Seimei. Wacky is, of course, the pet chicken, and Seimei is… a little pet dog, I think. Wacky hates Seimei since it spoils the pure love between her and her master, the boy with glasses. She winds up staying with Hana’s childhood friend, the now-slender somewhat perverted kid. Wacky also seems to feed whoever she is with her eggs with some degree of disturbing relish.
Then there are a couple chapters about Hana quitting the Hockey Club in order to work at a bakery part-time and get free pastries. Of course Izumi and company tries to foil this plot, and it doesn’t work… you know. The usual loop, which is unfortunate because I really thought this volume would be the one that moved forward. But bonus points for those yaoi manga girls showing up again. They’re all pretty funny.
The last chapter is a flashback to the childhood of Natsuki, the pretty boy member of the club whose name I can never remember. It’s notable only because it’s mostly the story about this girl who has problems about boys teasing her for lacking a chest and being generally very un-feminine (she is also some sort of karate master) making friends with Natsuki, who she thinks is also a somewhat unfeminine, but very pretty girl. Natsuki goes along with her because he’s so angry about being called a girl. I’m not sure how that works, but it was still funny all the same.
I mean… yeah. I would love for something to happen between Hana and Izumi. I’ve been waiting for this for the ENTIRE SERIES. Every volume is very funny, which impresses me because I’ve never liked an entirely humor-based series for this long, but… I want plot, dammit. It’s a shoujo comic. It needs to act like one.

Actually, I think the boy Wacky stays with is the student president’s younger brother, who was a large boy Hana had a “crush” on for of his stomach pillow (which so traumatized him that he decided to lose weight). He’s a different character than the perverted childhood friend from the snowy onsen resort.
Anyway, I always love your comments on this series—they usually match my thoughts, but the way you describe them makes me laugh. And yes! More plot development would be great.
Thanks for clarifying that, I think I’m going to go back and re-read a couple older volumes to get those characters straight in my head. For some reason, I was thinking that the perverted character and the stomach pillow boy were the same person. That’s the one weakness of this series… as funny as it is, the characters leave almost no impression on me.

Haha—so true about the characters. I’ve reread most volumes at least once, so I can keep most of the reoccurring characters’ faces straight (although sometimes I still have to think about it for a few minutes, or go back and page through previous volumes), but I still have the hardest time remembering the names of anyone beyond Hana and Izumi. (and the pets, haha. I can’t stand Martin, but I crack up every time I think of Seimei, so I guess I’m grateful to him for that)

Yeah, I’ve got no problem remembering the names of the pets. Wacky’s name is hard to forget, though somehow I had totally forgot about Seimei between volumes six and seven, which is kind of strange because he seems just as versatile joke-wise as Wacky.
Sadly, sometimes I have to look up Izumi’s name, though I can keep at least that straight when I’m reading the book itself. Even Martin’s name sort of slipped my mind, to the point I had to think a minute when they were talking about him. Martin’s name is unusual enough that it seems like it would stick in the memory. Somehow, even considering how obnoxious he is, it still does not.

You want a development in the plot huh? lol Well, I read there is this member who had already glanced through volume 12 and she/he said:
okay, i just flipped through the pages but this is so much i noe:
They go on a holiday again and they meet this weird “snow lady” or something and natsuki and her have some kind of “bond” that everyone seems to notice. I think shes a ghost or something and later disappears.
Now, the really surprising part:
Natsuki asks Izumi, “you’ve fallen for hana, haven;t you?” Then, Natsuki suddenly turns onto Hana! He keeps hurting and annoys Izumi. He then asks her to go to somewhere wiht him on a jet plane. Then they go to this posh resturant. She later goes to hotel and sleeps but then Natsuki pulls of his shirt and sleeps next to her… :P And then in the last few pages, Natsuki says “First it was to annoy Izumi but….” and kisses HANA!!! AND THEN…. AND THEN….. IZUMI SEES NATSUKI SAYING “DO YOU WANT TO BE MY GIRLFRIEND!!!”

I mean… yeah I love you and all Natsuki-sempai… but… it’s supposed to be HANA AND IZUMI!!!
I mean, yeah it’s a shoujo, but Ai-sensei better not make it into a confusing triangle!… (Or worse, a reversed harem! :P)
