Pastel 13

I reviewed this volume for this week’s Manga Minis column at Manga Recon, so you can check it out over there.

I don’t have too much to add.  Just that I wish that series was good, because when I remember what I like about it, it makes me cry to think that there’s a tender, subtle romance buried somewhere underneath Mako’s big breasts.  I don’t know that I’ll be reading future volumes, because I don’t see it shrugging its shounen stereotypes anytime soon.  It’s had enough time to fix its act, I just can’t do this anymore.  I feel bad, because this may be only the second or third time that a series has been terrible enough for me to quit.  But why read something I know I’m not going to enjoy?

    You know, I really wonder why you are still reading this series.. ;-) Okay, I haven’t read it, I confess, and it stil may be better than The Land of the Blindfolded I’m reading just now.. at least first two volumes are really disappointing..

    Haha, sorry to hear that one’s a dud. I’m surprised, most of the shoujo manga from CMX is quite good. I didn’t pick that one up because I don’t normally go for the psychic power stories, but it’s a shame you’re not enjoying it.

    I’ve still got a few series I need to catch up on from the last CMX sale. Cipher in particular is one I’m pretty excited about since I liked the first two volumes.

    But yeah, Pastel’s pretty bad. I’m swearing off of it for good this time.

    … and I have one more manga from the same author – I bought 2 volumes of Penguin Revolution. Now I’m really afraid to read it… ;-)

    That’s happened to me before, too. I hated Day of Revolution, but I had already bought all of its sequel, Princess Princess, before I found this out. You might check to see which came out first, Penguin Revolution or Land of the Bindfolded. Sometimes middle-grade artists improve drastically from one series to the next, so Penguin Revolution might be better if it came out later.

    That’s just me speculating, though. I have no idea about either one ^_^;
