xXxHolic 13
Posted: June 25, 2009 Filed under: XxXholic 3 Comments »Like I’ve said before, as much as I love this series, I’m not a big Kohane fan, and I would really like for things to return to the whole “Watanuki might not be a real person” angle that was picked up a volume or so ago. I’m dying to know more about that… but instead, we get a heroic Kohane rescue in this volume.
I don’t hate Kohane, I think my problem with her is mostly what I explained above, that every time she appears I would rather something else be happening instead. But she’s a good character to have around, and the end of her story in this volume is pretty good. Kohane only has her mother, and as her psychic powers seem to be failing her, she reminds her mother that the most important promise she’s ever made is that she would never lie to her mom. Alas, a spectacle is made on live TV. It’s actually a pretty good spectacle, and everything about it is pretty exciting. It’s got murder, ghosts, assault, and a last-minute save.
Later, Kohane turns up at the shop because she’s got a wish. There’s lots of foreshadowing, and I always have a feeling that the curtain is about to rise and the climax will play out in the next volume. I’m pretty sure things are winding down in Japan right now though, so it’s possible there really is only a volume or two left. I am absolutely dying to know about Watanuki and Yuuko’s situations after all these years. It will be so satisfying, and maybe it’ll be only a year off now. I will be very pleased. I complain and grumble sometimes, but Holic is still stylish, still mysterious, and still one of my favorite series.

I was pretty angry against CLAMP with not ending X (which I read since I was a high school girl, which was in 1997, before the 1999, which was supposed to be the end of the world LoL) so I didn’t want to read latest series such as Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic, which I regarded as “commercial”/”industrial” series. But I was wrong about xxxHolic. I borrowed them all in the library and … I was completely addicted… holic, you said? xD
I like Kohane-chan as a character :). But I also wanted to know more about… Watanuki being or not a human. Do you follow Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle? Both series are really connected, especially on the latest volumes. I can’t wait reading volume 14 but it’s been delayed on january in France >_<. This series is really worth reading and I do hope a great ending, as in Tokyo Babylon or RG Veda.
xXxHolic is one of my favorites from CLAMP. X will always be my favorite, and I’ve always been very disappointed that it was never finished (I have fond memories of reading that one in high school too). But xXxHolic is among their best, and Watanuki and Yuuko are my favorite CLAMP characters, I think. I just got volume 14 in the mail today, I’m pretty excited about that.
I’m reading Tsubasa alongside it. There’s a lot of crossover scenes, and parts of xXxHolic are a little confusing without Tsubasa, but Tsubasa is getting more and more disappointing with every volume. It’s much different than xXxHolic, less stylish, and it’s a lot of action… sort of like RG Veda. I liked it a lot at first, especially since the stories all went to different worlds based on old CLAMP stories and showed alternate versions of the characters and stories, but the plot has been getting more and more confusing. I am behind in the English volumes, and need to read them to see if they help, but I was reading the Japanese volumes a little bit ahead. I switched to someone else’s English translation when I started to get confused (my Japanese is really bad), but that didn’t help either. I’m hoping reading the volumes in English will help, but I think the plot just isn’t very good. Of course, I was 20 volumes in before I started to really dislike it, so there are lots of good things about it, but I never really liked it as much as the old CLAMP series. I’m hoping the parts I don’t like won’t have too much influence on xXxHolic.
