My Heavenly Hockey Club 8

I reviewed this volume for this week’s Manga Minis column at Manga Recon, so check out the review over there.
It’s still funny, and I didn’t even notice the plot wasn’t going anywhere in this volume (but I couldn’t help but notice the horrible teaser pages in the back, which make it look like something exciting happens next time). One thing I always fail to mention when I talk about this series, though, is the food. That’s actually the main theme of the series (hockey is mentioned all of one time in this volume), and it’s quite good at spotlighting different types of Japanese regional delicacies. I learn more about Japanese food from this series and its end notes than I ever will from Oishinbo, which is both sad and amazing.
I had to laugh at the last line in this post. You’re right! Hockey Club has an incredible amount of delicious looking food, especially for a so-called sports manga. And the end notes go really in-depth with information on the various regional delicacies. I haven’t picked up this volume yet, but your mostly-positive reaction has me looking forward to it and the next-volume teaser, even if (unsurprisingly) the plot continues to go nowhere.
Yeah, I think I always disregard that food information while I’m reading, but it sort of hit me when I finished this volume because there’s a short comic in the back about how much Ai Morinaga likes ordering exotic food over the internet and keeping it in her fridge for “research purposes” for her food manga. And then it kind of hit me just how much loving detail had gone into talking about the food over the course of the series.
