Maid-sama 2

Hiro Fujiwara – Tokyopop – 2009 – 7+ volumes

I reviewed this for the weekly Manga Minis column at Manga Recon, so you can check out my review over there.

A lot of the new Tokyopop licenses seem… hmm.  Last week I reviewed Bloody Kiss, targeted at people looking for vampire romance.  Maid-sama is for romance junkies with a fondness for maids.  I like Maid-sama a lot and did not care for Bloody Kiss, but I wouldn’t say Maid-sama is the better series.  Well, maybe a little, but both could go very well or very badly depending on your particular tastes while reading them.  You like to laugh?  You don’t mind maids?  You like tough girls and dopey guys?  Try Maid-sama.  That’s what it has to offer.  I liked it quite a bit.

i was gonna ask u if u had read this! i really like it. it Actually makes me laugh. and i think the main couple has good chemistry, tho i like lots of the supporting cast. as much as the male body of her school suck, they are so hilarious. i don’t care about the maid thing. i just think it’s awesome.

I was actually thinking of what you said about Bloody Kiss when I was writing the review. I loved pretty much everything about Maid-sama, but what you said made me realize that it might have hit more on my favorite things rather than being really, REALLY good in the way the best shoujo series are. But it is pretty awesome, and there’s a lot about it that made me laugh while I read it. The male student body at the school is probably the best part of the series.

i’m not sure how much of the series you’ve read, but the later chapters have been rather disappointing, especially since the characters don’t develop much. (I loved the beginning volumes of the series to bits too!)
Kare Kano (His and Her circumstances) = similar premise but much better. (it’s an older series, but definitely worth checking out!)

I was afraid this one might lose a little steam as it kept going, nothing much seemed to be changing in the first couple volumes, as much as I liked it.

I was planning to pick up the nifty omnibus releases for Kare Kano that just started coming out. I’ve heard nothing but good things about that series, and it seems like most everyone who read it was hooked all the way to the end.
