Sgt. Frog 5

My favorite chapter was definitely the Natsumi’s birthday chapter. I loved the way it turned out after all of Fuyuki’s doubts, I loved all the presents, and I loved Natsumi’s “Kururu!? I don’t think you’ve ever spoken to me before…” It was quite a touching chapter, even for Sgt. Frog. I hated the ending though, I know it had to do something funny, but I thought that kind of cheapened it.
I also really liked the TV episode chapter with tour hosts from outer space. The way that the elder Hinata and Natsumi ganged up on the two at the end, and the fact that those two were just a couple of destructive creeps won a lot of points for me.
Yeah, I loved most of what was in this one. I’ll probably buy the anime version of this when it comes out, because I still think this is one of the funniest series I’m reading.

I remember being slightly tired of the jokes after reading 3, but it’s such a good series I figured I’d just space the volumes out more to enjoy it. This seemed to work, as I loved it once again here. There was some really funny stuff in this volume. My favorite was probably the plot that revolved around getting Natsumi so mad that she blew everything up, then a photo was sent to Keroro’s dad so it looked like progress had been made. It was a brilliant plan that seemed to work out well, but the fact that a photo was its purpose made it even better.
The tadpole recruit visiting Tamama and getting him in all kinds of trouble was also awesome. I particularly liked Keroro’s role in this story too, where Tamama had to pray that Keroro wasn’t building plastic models.
Many of the stories in here were hilarious. So hilarious that I wanted to follow it up with another volume immediately, but after my experience with 3, I decided this wouldn’t be a good idea. No, Keroro needs to be savored like a fine wine. He should only chase down the most boring or depressing manga, so it makes him look that much better.

I think Mine Yoshizaki realized this early on though, because he doesn’t really talk very often, and as is mentioned at the back of the volume, he does now provide lots of inventions for the frogs to play with.
Lots of weird character stuff going on here with the humans. Mama gets shrunk, Natsumi gets grown, Tamama’s girl gets split, and we even get a little transformation out of Angol Moa. One wonders if she only calls the Seargant “Uncle” or if he actually is, somehow, her uncle. I forget even though she was just introduced… there did seem to be some sort of family connection. One wonders only because she does harbor a huge crush on him.
One other thing that’s amazing here is that somehow they turned the badass, hardass red frog that likes to carry guns around into the bitch of the group. Tamama, the eccentric subordinate weakling, is not the bitch. No, the bright red angry frog with a scar across his eye is constantly being made into the bitch of the group. That fascinates me in a lot of ways.
This series is still pretty funny, but I think I need to space my reading of it out some, because I didn’t like this volume as much as the others.

Back issues (and new issues, for that matter) are getting harder and harder to find for this series. I passed up one with a foil cover in May or so, and someone else bought it and I had to wait til now to get a different edition with no foil or color pages. Sad.
But what’s not sad is this story. It’s SO FUNNY. I can’t believe I put off buying it as long as I did. We get to meet two new frogs here, Red and Yellow. Giroro and Kururu. I wound up loving both, of course. I don’t really like the kid that Kururu has attached himself to, which is unfortunate, but I love what a little perv Kururu is. Also, Giroro having a crush on Natsumi=AWESOME.

Everyone keeps talking about it, so I went ahead and watched the first episode of the anime to test the waters and see if I liked the plot. It was hilarious, and I had to stop myself at episode three since I hate spoiling manga with anime.
I was not disappointed. This series is SO FUNNY. I was a bit worried I wouldn’t like it as much since I was afraid it would just make stupid jokes that I wouldn’t enjoy (as the plot IS about a frog invading earth, which is kind of stupid), but I loved it. I fucking loved everything about it, plot, every single one of the characters, and the way Gunsou has to collect all his crewmen, and also how he got his own room and has to work around the house to earn his keep, the mom, finding Tamama, EVERYTHING. If I had a criticism, it would be that the stories are a bit too fragmented and a bit random, but it’s actually almost not an issue, and I just love the series so much… I NEED the rest, but I lack funds to buy them at the moment. Soon, though, soon…
