MPD Psycho 7

February 24, 2009

I reviewed this volume for the Manga Minis column at Manga Recon, and you can read my review here.

Plot always confuses me in this series, especially when it’s given all at once like it is here.  We had a good run of volumes I liked, so I guess it was about time for another one of these.

But really, seeing Shinji Nishizono giving me the GWASHI! hand sign is one of the things I can cross off my list of things I need to do in life.  Or I would cross it off, if I even thought that was ever possible.

Seriously.  I’ve never seen anyone but Kazuo Umezu and company do it.  Why is MPD Psycho the first time I’ve ever run across a Makoto-chan reference in a manga?  That’s… well, just awesome.

That hand gesture is completely impossible to do! (Yes, I just tried). But the tendon for the pinkie finger goes across the one for the fourth finger and acts like a seatbelt (piano teacher training comes in use!) so if the fifth finger is bent down there’s no way the fourth one could be sticking up straight.

Oh, I’ve been trying to perfect my technique. Kazuo Umezu actually carries around a giant novelty hand that he uses whenever the mood strikes him to do that particular gesture. His assistant can do it, though, which blew my mind because I figured there was a medical reason it was impossible (and now I know what that reason is, thank you very much). I can’t remember if she uses her thumb while she’s doing it, though. If not, that’s pretty amazing.
